In 2023/24 I stayed in Lubumbashi, Congo nearly 5 months for an internship at Centre d’Art Waza (to see their website CLICK HERE). From the moment I arrived in Congo, Religious and spiritual life struck me as really expressive and present in the people, enviroment and the interactions. A world in which faith and ‘graçe de Dieu’ are the principles of life. I find this aspect of Congo/Lubumbashi deeply meaningful. The action of living as a spiritual activity is what I tried to observe and capture in my enviroment. This is mixed with music I discovered and listened to, some writing, and interviews with some of the people from my enviroment. The central question in these interviews “Comment tu prie?” arose from my own realisation that I did not know how to pray, a fundamental activity in Congolese life. The richness of the answers I got are really beautiful.

The picture is the whatsapp photo of Dumiel I screenshotted when I was out of megabytes and Airtel money. It is trough talking with her that this project was born.

This project is also closely connected to my own position as a young, white, european artist with big ambitions. Initially I was set on organizing an exhibition in Lubumbashi but a series of confrontations forced me into a position of profound questioning in which listening and observing were the only things left for me to do.
